5D (Don't Dump Drugs Down Drains) Drug Disposal Volunteer

If you are an environmentally minded person, concerned about helping seniors properly dispose of their old medications. This opportunity is for you and our seniors will be grateful. There are two possible ways you could help a senior:

  • You and the senior can take the drugs to a designated drop–off location near the senior’s home
  • If the senior cannot leave their home, you will be trained on how to use a kit containing chemicals, which when added to the medication renders it safe for disposal in the normal trash.
Board Member

If you enjoy management, problem solving, fundraising, and have a heart for seniors, consider becoming a member of the Heart of the Valley Board of Directors.

Your Responsibilities Would Include:

  • Attending board meetings on the 2nd Monday of every month at 6:00pm
  • Providing planning and vision for Heart of the Valley
  • Helping to provide direction, guidance, and set agency policies
  • Helping with fundraising and public relations

Computer/Technology Teacher

Only 1% of Heart of the valley seniors know how to use a computer. We want that to change.Therefore, we are seeking volunteers with computer and technology knowledge who would be willing to teach a senior in their home. If you think you have some time and patience for teaching a senior computer basics or how to use some other piece of technology, such as an iPad, digital camera, or answering machine, please let us know! We could use your help today!

Your Responsibilities Would Include:

  • Helping seniors learn computer basics such as how to turn on and off their computer, how to send email, how to search for information on their medicines or health concerns, how to shop online, how to play games, how to download photos from their digital camera, how to watch a YouTube video, create a Facebook page, or Skype a loved one.
  • Help with whatever the senior wants to learn, within your good judgement 🙂

Daytime Drivers — Escorted Transportation

Many of our seniors need assistance getting to medical appointments. If you can offer a little time to provide escorted transportation to a senior, please contact Glenda at 408-241-1571. Escorted transportation providers pick the senior up at their home, take them to their appointment, stay with them and bring them home. Once in a while it is just a drop off! Waiting rooms are great places to meet people, take a break, daydream, get work done, hide, play video games, worry, catch up on correspondence, tweet, read the newspaper, check out U tube, file your nails, catch up on your favorite novel, clean out your purse or wallet, clean your glasses or sleep.

Your Responsibilities Would Include:

  • Drive seniors to medical appointments or grocery shopping, errands, social events, remaining with the senior to advocate for them with medical personnel or help with shopping and putting the groceries away as needed.
  • Run errands or grocery shop for a homebound senior
  • Report the number of miles driven to help a senior

Qualifications You Would Need Include:

  • Friendly and caring concern for our seniors
  • Keep your own a car in good working condition
  • Drive a car that is easy for a senior to enter and exit
  • Maintain a current California Drivers License and a good driving record.
  • Maintain a minimum of $25,000/50,000 public liability in car insurance (current state minimum) while volunteering for HOV
  • Supportive of HOV goals and services

Friendly Visitor or Friendly Phone Caller

If you enjoy engaging someone in conversion whether in person or on the phone and enjoy both talking and listening, we could use your help. Many of our seniors feel lonely and isolated at home. Some enjoy a visitor, while others just want to hear a friendly person on the telephone to help keep their spirits up or to discuss the worry they might be having. Do you have some time to help a senior not feel forgotten?

Your Responsibilities Would Include:

  • Visit clients in their home for a chat or maybe a walk and talk around the block
  • Be a friendly phone caller to a senior who just to chat and visit over the phone
  • Report the number of miles driven to visit a senior in their home

  • Good listening skills

Gardener

Do you enjoy gardening or doing light yard work? We have seniors who can no longer easily maintain their gardens due to physical and mobility issues. These seniors would greatly appreciate your help, and you can have they satisfaction of creating something that brings joy to both you and our senior. They will provide the tools and any plants, and you will provide the time and labor. If a request can’t be completed in one visit, you may ask the senior to call in another request to be finished by you or another volunteer.

Your Responsibilities Would Include:

  • Providing assistance to a senior with light yard work or gardening

  • Friendly and caring concern for seniors
  • Enjoy working outside
  • Some interest or knowledge of gardening

Handy/Fix-it Person

Are you a do–it–yourself person or someone who does repairs for a living? Our seniors live on a fixed income and cannot afford costly repair bills. Would you be willing to help them with small home repairs or handyman projects around their homes? They would provide any parts and some tools. You would provide other tools, if needed as well as your time and labor.

Your Responsibilities Would Include:

  • Assist seniors with small home repairs and handyman projects around their homes

Help with Pets

Are you a pet lover? Do you understand how important a pet can be in the life of a senior? Seniors with pets could use your help taking their pets to the vet or groomers. Seniors who have had pets in the past, need your help so they can foster a pet or just visit with one through the Humane Society Silicon Valley’s Humane Hearts 4 Pets and Their Seniors Program.

Your Responsibilities Would Include:

  • Driving a senior and their pet to the vet or groomers
  • Helping with Foster Pets and Their Seniors program
  • Help picking up pet supplies from the Humane Society Pet Pantry for our seniors
  • Help a senior care for their pet by bathing or walking them
  • Help a senior care for their pet by brushing them

Qualifications You Would Need Include:

  • Enjoy working with animals
  • Interest and some knowledge of pet care

House Project Providers

Are you someone who enjoys cleaning and organizing? We have seniors who could use your help to organize their closets, cupboards, or old photos, provide light housework, or help with cleaning the oven or refrigerator. If a request can’t be completed in one visit, you may ask the senior to call in another request to be finished by you or another volunteer.

Your Responsibilities Would Include:

  • Vacuuming or dusting
  • Cleaning an oven or refrigerator
  • Organizing cupboards or closets
  • Decorating the home for a party or the holidays
  • Putting photos in albums
  • Washing windows
  • Sorting through boxes or a wardrobe

Household Hazardous Waste Pickup

Do you care about the environment and the proper disposal of household hazardous waste? Our seniors care about that too. But often they are unsure about what is consider hazardous waste and how to properly dispose of it. At Heart of the Valley we have a program to educate seniors about household hazardous waste and help them to properly dispose of this waste. If you are interested, you could be trained to educate and help our seniors with their household hazardous waste. We could use your help today!

Your Responsibilities Would Include:

  • Going to the home of our seniors and help them identify household hazardous waste
  • Picking up household hazardous waste from the home of a senior and then properly disposing of the waste

Requirements:

  • Fill out a volunteer application and attend an interview.
  • Attend a training session on proper identification, pickup and delivery of household hazardous waste materials.
  • Be in good physical shape and be able to lift items weighing up to twenty pounds, it order to pickup and properly dispose of waste products collected
  • Provide own car or truck and must have the insurance required for CA drivers.
  • Have a valid CA Driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Be available for at least one Friday or Saturday per month as that is when the waste drop off locations are open.
  • Can choose to go to senior’s homes to educate, identify and gather household hazardous waste at your convenience.

In-A-Pinch Volunteer

Can you be available by phone or text to help a senior with an unforseen, immediate need? Perhaps, a senior runs out of heart medication, or their little pet gets ill, light bulbs or batteries go out, or they need toilet paper or incontinence supplies…these are the kinds of jobs that we want to attend to within 24 hours of the call…the sooner, the better. If you can squeeze little jobs into your day, please sign up to be an In-A-Pinch volunteer. It’s easy to do and requires less time than our regular services. Give it a try!

Your Responsibilities Would Include:

  • Helping a senior who has run out of their daily heart medication
  • Taking a senior to an urgent doctor’s appointment
  • Helping a senior get toilet paper or incontinence supplies
  • Helping a senior take a sick pet to the vet
  • Helping a senior fix a light bulb in a critical location in their home

Requirements:

  • Fill out a volunteer application and attend an interview.
  • Provide your own vehicle with the insurance required for CA drivers.
  • Have a valid CA Driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Be available by text or phone to help a senior within 24 hours of the request
  • Follow through once you accept the In–A–Pinch service

Join Speaker's Bureau

Do you enjoy talking to others? We would love to have you participate in the Speakers Bureau.Heart of the Valley wants to increase its community awareness by expanding our Speakers Bureau so we can reach out to more individuals, service groups and agencies within our service area. Would you consider helping by talking to others about the needs of seniors and how HOV provides ways to help them stay in their homes? You don’t need to be a professional speaker talking to large groups — we are hoping to talk to small neighborhood groups, service organizations (i.e., Lions, Rotary, Soroptomists), churches, as well as larger groups at community centers, and hospitals. We usually work with the “Buddy System”, so if you feel more comfortable working with another, that is also great!

Night Drivers – Escorted Transportation

Drivers needed for our “Night Riders Program”. On May 1, 2014, one of our beloved Founding Members, Aldyth Parle, was killed driving her car home from an evening meeting. She was 89 years old and very active in her community. We realize that there are many active seniors who serve on Boards of Directors, attend evening functions, go to club meetings and church events, etc. In honor of Aldyth, we want to find volunteers who are willing to drive clients after dark. If you have a little time after work in the evenings, or are available to drive weekend evenings, please sign up. You could save a life and would certainly enrich a senior’s life by helping them to stay active in our community.

Paperwork or Telephoning or Reading

Shopping and Errands

Are you someone who enjoys shopping and wants to help seniors in need? Call us today! We have many seniors who need to get some groceries or run some errands and could very much use your help.

Your Responsibilities Would Include:

      • Taking seniors to the bank, drug store, hardware store, supermarket, the mall, shoe stores, optical stores, pet stores, etc.
      • Carrying packages, keep track of lists, and put things away on request.
      • Shopping for seniors who are home bound from a given list. You will work with the senior to develop an accurate list and then purchase the items and bring them back to the senior’s home.

Take Seniors on Outings

Do you have a heart for might feel lonely and isolated seniors? We are looking for volunteers to take seniors on outings for our “Young @ Heart” Program. Social isolation is a grave concern when it comes to seniors. If you would like to be a volunteer who takes a senior to activities where they can join other seniors at city parks, museums, on hikes, track walking, or to dog parks, please call our office.

Vehicle Donation Assistant

Do you like cars and know a little about them? Heart of the Valley’s Vehicle Donation Manager is in need of an assistant to help pick up vehicles, assess their condition, have them repaired and sell them. If you have a general knowledge of vehicles and some time to help, please contact Glenda at (408) 241-1571.

Veterans or Active Service Volunteer Drivers

Are you a vet or active service person who might have a few hours a week or month to help out an older veteran? “Vets Driving Vets” is our newest program. We are looking for veterans to help drive older veterans to their medical, business, and social appointments. Our volunteers have always driven veterans, however, over the years we have discovered that our older vets enjoy the ride more when they are helped by a volunteer who is a veteran or in active service. It provides a chance to once again share the “brotherhood” that comes from being with a vet, enhances their ride, and does wonders for their well–being. If you have some time, sign up for this, you will be glad you did!

Yard Work

Do you enjoy the outdoors and don’t mind doing a little light yard work? Maybe you don’t have a yard of your own? Call us and we can connect you with a senior who would appreciate some help with their yard!

Your Responsibilities Would Include:

      • Helping to mow lawns, rake leaves, pull weeds, do watering, trim trees and bushes, plant flowers and plants, clean patios, clean gutters, and manage gardens. Our seniors would provide the tools and supplies and you would provide your time and energy.
